Waste

Waste is defined as any material or object that its owner disposes of, wishes to dispose of or must dispose of.

According to the Closed Substance Cycle Waste Management Act (KrWG), waste must first and foremost be avoided. If this is not possible, the environmentally sound recycling of waste has priority over its disposal.

Promoting a low-waste circular economy, ensuring environmentally friendly waste recycling and disposal and guaranteeing the security of waste disposal in the city area is anchored as an objective of the city of Jena in the current wastemanagement concept.

The practical implementation of waste management in Jena - such as the emptying of waste containers, the operation of recycling centers, the disposal of bulky waste and much more - is carried out by the city's own company, Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ). It is also responsible for enforcing the current waste and waste fee statutes of the city of Jena.

The lower waste authority of the city of Jena isresponsible for the official regulation andmonitoring of waste legislation. This also includes advising citizens and businesses on the possibilities of waste avoidance and recycling (-> waste advice).

At the end of 2015, the Thuringian ordinance on the disposal of plantwastewas amended. Since then, it is no longer possible to dispose of plant waste by burning. Priority should be given to disposing ofthis waste by leaving it lying around, plowing it under or digging it up. Prior mechanical treatment of the waste (e.g. chopping or shredding) is advantageous for decomposition.

If it is not possible to recycle gardenwaste, green waste, branches and tree cuttings onyour own property, they can be handed in at the KSJ recycling centers(link is external).

If you find illegal waste dumping in the area of the city of Jena, you can contact the employees of the lower waste authority of the city of Jena. Your information will be treated confidentially towards third parties.
