Award for green oases

Greenery on and around buildings contributes significantly to the beautification of our cityscape. In addition to the aesthetic aspect, greenery on buildings is of great importance for the urban climate and ecology. Rainwater is retained, stored and later released again, creating a balanced microclimate in summer. The leaf mass binds pollutants such as CO2 and provides food and habitat for numerous animals such as birds and insects. Last but not least, the color green has a calming and relaxing effect on us humans - green is a piece of perceived quality of life.

Competition 2024

The winners of this year's "Award for Green Oases in Jena" have been announced. All owners and designers of ecologically and aesthetically particularly successful green façades, roofs, balconies, front gardens, courtyards and fallow land were invited to apply.

The prize is worth a total of €2,000 and has been divided among several winners.

On behalf of all the winners, Mayor and Head of Urban Development Christian Gerlitz congratulated the winner Ms. Witte on 14.10.2024 for her specially designed oasis around the apartment block in Schrödingerstraße, which was created with a great deal of dedication and creativity. This not only invites people to linger and meet, but also provides food and a habitat for numerous insects and small animals all year round. The planting of flowers, perennials and shrubs has created a valuable green space in this densely populated residential area. This commitment can serve as an inspiring example for other blocks of flats in Jena. Kathy Witte received prize money of €700 and a voucher from Boock Gartenkultur in recognition of her efforts.

Patrick Peters was also recognized for his commitment. He created a small green oasis in a previously sealed inner courtyard in Sophienstraße, which now attracts not only birds and butterflies, but also neighbors and friends to linger regularly. Prize money of €700 and a voucher from Boock Gartenkultur were also awarded for this achievement.

Other awards went to Katrin and Hendrik Fröderking for their design of a green front garden in Johann-Friedrich-Straße and to Melanie Schneider, who created a lot of greenery on the roof of the carport in Friedenstraße despite the limited space available. Both projects were awarded prize money of €300 each.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all applicants for their commitment.
